Counting Nodal Lines Which Touch the Boundary of an Analytic Domain

We consider the zeros on the boundary ∂Ω of a Neumann eigenfunction φλj of a real analytic plane domain Ω. We prove that the number of its boundary zeros is O(λj) where −∆φλj = λ2jφλj . We also prove that the number of boundary critical points of either a Neumann or Dirichlet eigenfunction is O(λj). It follows that the number of nodal lines of φλj (components of the nodal set) which touch the b...

Stationary Isothermic Surfaces and Uniformly Dense Domains

We establish a relationship between stationary isothermic surfaces and uniformly dense domains. A stationary isothermic surface is a level surface of temperature which does not evolve with time. A domain Ω in the Ndimensional Euclidean space RN is said to be uniformly dense in a surface Γ ⊂ RN of codimension 1 if, for every small r > 0, the volume of the intersection of Ω with a ball of radius ...

Brownian Couplings, Convexity, and Shy-ness

Benjamini, Burdzy, and Chen (2007) introduced the notion of a shy coupling: a coupling of a Markov process such that, for suitable starting points, there is a positive chance of the two component processes of the coupling staying at least a given positive distance away from each other for all time. Among other results, they showed that no shy couplings could exist for reflected Brownian motions...

Solution of Thermo-Fluid problems in Bounded Domains via the Numerical Panel Method

The classical panel method has been extensively used in external aerodynamics to calculate ideal flow fields around moving vehicles or stationary structures in unbounded domains. However, the panel method, as a somewhat simpler implementation of the boundary element method, has rarely been employed to solve problems in closed complex domains. This paper aims at filling this gap and discusses th...

A ug 2 00 4 TOWARDS A CLASSIFICATION OF HOMOGENEOUS TUBE DOMAINS IN C 4

We classify the tube domains in C 4 with affinely homogeneous base whose boundary contains a non-degenerate affinely homogeneous hypersurface. It follows that these domains are holo-morphically homogeneous and amongst them there are four new examples of unbounded homogeneous domains (that do not have bounded realisations). These domains lie to either side of a pair of Levi-indefinite hypersurfa...
